Could John Ross' brother Joseph Have Also Been Known As John Ross?

Trove Newspaper articles have lead me to believe that Joseph Ross was sometimes referred to as John Ross. They had a connection with Sarah Bird and John Ross was noted as his brother in law. Could Ellen Ross have been related to Sarah? I have several posts that cover the relationship between Bird and the Rosses and also theories about Ellen Ross.

It is widely believed that John Ross who was a convict and shoemaker was my fourth Great-Grandfather. I started this post with the intention of outlining my research for John Ross but as I familiarised myself with some of the convict John's story, I realised that there are stories where the articles talk about Joseph and in the courts he is also called John. Is it possible that they both used the name John?

While there is a question about who John Lees' father was, we do know from St Johns Parramatta baptism records his mother was Ellen Ross, a spinster living at Bankstown in September 1836. John Lees' death records name his father as John Ross, a land selector. Edward, John Lees' son, registered these details but declared the mother unknown. Edward was an adult when the family left Araluen to move to Tingha. Ellen had been alive then and married to John Seeley, why he declared her unknown is puzzling other than wanting to perhaps hide John Lees' bastard birth or the possibility that Ellen was Aboriginal (maybe when asked her surname the answer was "Unknown" so whole field was recorded as "Unknown").

Sarah Weatherstone Part 1 From Birth to Departure

Sarah Age 18, based on Convict Indent descriptions  When I was handed some family history papers on our Lang family, each person's background information took about a page. Sarah Weatherstone's entire life was written in 2 sentences. It seemed little was available on her in 2004, yet 10 years later she is the ancestor in my family tree that I know most about. I don't think I would have liked her, but then again she grew up in tough times and perhaps things would have been different for Sarah if she'd been born in a different place and time.  My research is ongoing and already new information has come to light and had me spending a few nights editing this post and Part 2.  Part 3 is being written, but the research is taking longer, because it's once she reaches Australia that we really do find out a lot about Sarah! Michael Cotter - The Details

I belong to the Cotter Clan. The last surviving male from my branch recently told me "you're definitely a Cotter". I never realised how much interest or information there was out there about my Cotter family. A great deal of the information carefully checked over and redistributed by one amazing Daffyd Cotter. The following profile is mostly put together with information supplied by Daffyd. As I have time I will include some of the stories I've learnt about Michael, including his time as a convict, the time he spent in goal, his family, being held up by bushrangers, and his death. 1809 or 1812 - born in or around Fermoy, County Cork, Ireland - (Father was James) 20th May 1830 - stole a sheep from a William Hennessy. Occupation listed as Ploughman & Reaper 21st May 1830 - arrested in Rathcormac with the stolen sheep 17th August 1830 - tried and found guilty for theft sometime between August and November 1830 - sentenced to seven years transportation to N.S.W.
