The Three John Rosses

In searching for his parents perhaps it is worth looking more closely at John Lees Ross.

*I began this post a long time ago and put it to rest but I've received John's Death certificate today so thought it might be a good time to add any other information.  I'm not ready to start a story on him but anyone who passes by to collect some facts might kindly like to share anything that I'm not aware of.

We have three John Ross' but for the purpose of this post his father is John Ross Snr and he is John Lee Ross. John Ross Jnr was his son.

FATHER
There is conflicting information about John Ross Snr. Some family trees having him as being from Wigton in England arriving on the Countess of Harcourt as a convict in 1824 with his brother Joseph.

When John Lees Ross was born (3 August 1836) his mother was recorded as Ellen Ross, spinster of Bankstown. His baptism records were for St John's at Parramatta and subsequent records including his marriage certificate also indicate he was born at Parramatta.

John Lees Ross' death certificate was registered by his son Edward he gave his father's details as John Ross, selector, mother unknown. This is unusual as Ellen Ross had seemed to have spent time before her death with John Lees Ross' family, but she had remarried when John was only 10 years old so her name had changed. When she married she was Ellen Ross, spinster. Her death record had shown that she had married John Ross Snr in around 1830 in Sydney.

IF John Ross Snr had existed he would have died between 1835 and 1849.

Interestingly Ellen's death records claim she came to Australia around 1824 and as above we can see that was when John & Joseph arrived in Australia.

But my gut feeling is maybe John Ross Snr was a piece of fiction. It may have been her father or a brother's name but I suspect Ellen Ross may have been her maiden "spinster" name and to hide her convict past an elaborate story was made.

I have a new theory for Ellen. Also probably a piece of fiction but I will post it now before I lose this train of thought.
