Ellen Ross - A Colourful Character
I literally stumbled across this document while looking for something else.
This record (dated 29 December 1836) is for Ellen Ross a convict from the ship Pyramus. A search of the records show that this woman is Elizabeth Ross. One of the thing that interests me is that R Lee is the person who has accused her. This "Ellen" Ross lives in the Parramatta area and is around the age of our Ellen Ross. This Ellen Ross has a lot of interesting stories to tell.
We have a few colourful articles about Eliza Ross.
The Pyramus arrived in March 1832 and in the Sydney Gazette just a week later it was reported
She hadn't learnt anything from her visit to see the loins and in June was charged with taking off without permission, and with her mistresses daughter, and getting her drunk!
Her indents show she's a very tattooed lady and of bad conduct, however by March 1848 she had received a conditional Pardon.
There are more stories to be found of her, more records of visits to gaol etc. But for now I will let this Elizabeth/Eliza/Ellen Ross rest. One thing it has made me realise is there is a lot of information out there about our female convicts. If our Ellen Ross was one she does not appear on the records. Unless Ellen Ross was a persumed name I am again beginning to think she came as a free person. Perhaps as a child of one of the many Ross convicts or once again as the Ellen Ross of the Bussorah Merchant.

Eliza Ross, who was landed a week back from the Pyramus made her debut at the Police Office, for taking a cruise to see the Sydney lions, but, at the intercession of her master, was discharged. We can see she was assigned to D J Smith as a servant of all work.

It seems Eliza didn't like laundry and was sent "to take the veil" just a short time later. She'd been in the colony for less than 7 months and already had a few run ins with the law!
I've randomly found another article (Sept 1832) while searching for John Ross. I can only persume that this is our girl. A big nose? How funny these articles are.
She was still in the Parramatta area in 1839, but it is now we feel we can dismiss her as our Ellen Ross as she marries Thomas Riley at St John's Parramatta on 17 May.http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article12845353 |
