Finding James Hardy - 7
I've pinned down James Hardy & his wife Jane as having arrived per the London, a convict ship which departed from Kingston, Northern Ireland, 20 December, 1850 and arrived Hobart Town, 20 March, 1851.
The reasons I have come to this conclusion are:
James & Jane's daughter Isabella was born at sea (BDM records) and registered April 1851.
Ship's surgeon James Booth's medical journal records one child surviving birth on the ship.
Military records record James being sent with 4 others to Newry to board a convict ship to Australia as a convict guard.
James Hardy Serial Number 155.
Shipping Intelligence for the month shows convict ship London arrived 20 March (close to estimated date in above image). It was the only convict ship arriving from Kingstown and onboard were 30 pensioners guards.
James Hardy is named in the medical records of the Cornwall that arrived in 1851. Isabell Hardy was listed as being born at sea April 1851 and this would mean it could not have been the LONDON although it made sense that it had left Kingston.
Counting backward from April than Isabell was likely conceived around July so when James was in Ireland. This helps to try and narrow down a possible wedding for Jane & James in Ireland.
Findings While Researching
There are military records (Find my Past) in 1845 for a James Hardy (ships cook) of about the same age with a son James William Hardy baptised at Plymouth in 1839. It is interesting that William was a family name (though was also a name from the Littlewood side of the family). The name Abigal Stephens is added to William's as a trustee. From 1841 census records Abigal's name appears in a family household with a resident James W Hardy, her 11 year old nephew. (This James can sign his name so probably not our James, also the location is wrong if out James is in Ireland.) A marriage record (1838) can be found at Plymouth for James Hardy & Ellen Stephens so this indicates that perhaps Abigal is James' sister in law
Sailor James Hardy Serial Number 5699 working on a steam ship Infexible in 1846/7.
James Hardy with wife Caroline Hardy (located on Isle of Wright) at Devonport 1847 (appears to be a sailor) married Plymoth 1847. Can't sign his name.
