Chopping Off Another Branch - John Ross Senior & Ellen Ross
John Ross (Senior) as a person has an interesting story to tell.
Transported to Australia and in and out of gaol. His final sentence was 3 years in the chain gang just before his death.
Many researchers on my line have him as Ellen Ross' husband but no records are found to substantiate this except the church records for John Ross & Catherine Torney's state his mother was Ellen Ross' (maiden name) and father was John Ross (deceased).
I'm not sure who first connected the records together whether it was on Ancestry.com.au or a different platform but I've come firmly to the understanding that family trees, including my own can't be firmly reliable. I think it important to review your trees especially as new records become available. I try my best to substantiate facts with at least 2 sources and those of us who have been doing this long enough, know that even a birth certificate, death certificate or marriage certificate cannot fully be trusted.
Ellen Ross in many trees is noted as dying in 1858 in Camperdown. With few records at this time this seems plausible, that is until we put several records together.
The BDM site was probably the go to place for amateur researchers 8-10 years ago. A search there gives 2 records with no parent details one is in Goulburn and other without detail. With Ancestry we get a hint with death records that the death was recorded at Camperdown and with the link to John Ross the convict at Parramatta we now assume this is our Ellen Ross.
However, when we go to the Camperdown cemetery records we find Eliza Ross with burial number (BN06603) from BDM records matching Ellen Ross death 1858. This Ellen/Eliza is only 6 months old.
Searching for the BDM reference 313/1858 we discover the name is also registered as Eliza and parents are James and Ann. Some confusion may come from the following burial number also for an infant named Ellen Beattie.
So comes the question who is our Ellen and when did she die? This shall be explored another post.

The above assault charge took place in September 1833. Of interest is Ralph Howe was a fellow convict about the Countess of Harcourt.
